It's a very simple image. I was thinking what a story it might hide and actually several came to my mind.
It was one of those days when the weather was terrible, the planned sea trip in search of whales was cancelled but since you are on holiday you have nothing to do but to go out & explore. It was a wrong turn or, better to say, a fault of our curiosity. The narrow road was supposed to go to the ocean. It did. It went down at a crazy angle and it was impossible to turn back. The place was called Ponta da Galera, so it didn't promise any good (in fact in Portuguese "galera" has another meaning: folks, friends or a galley). The road ended abruptly in front of a thundering ocean. I got out of the car in order my friend could have a turn. The place was deserted. Then out of nowhere I saw the back of a man. I took a shot. I have no idea if he was a seaman or a fisherman or just a man waiting by the sea.
In 2018 I sent this picture to a photo competition in Salerno. The competition was called "The sea inside". They wrote that I need to be there for the award ceremony. I replied that on that day I was supposed to head to another place. "Either you send someone to get the certificate or we find another finalist". Several handshakes away rule worked. My Italian friend had a friend from Campania (the region where Salerno is located) from university. He was living in the north of Italy for many years. It was August, a traditional Italian summer holidays' time. Coincidentally his nephew (again from another place in the north) was heading to the family place. So this nephew was representing me in Salerno that day. I've never seen neither him nor the symbolic prize but who cares!
